iGuidance GPS Software - FAQ

  • Installation/Setup

    1. I select COM 5 to connect to the Bluetooth GPS receiver, the software hangs indefinitely and does not connect to the GPS.

iGuidance v2.0.1 (and earlier versions) cannot determine whether Bluetooth radio is turned on or off. If the radio is off, iGuidance will hang because the interrupt never returns. Please check and make sure that the Bluetooth radio is turned on before launching iGuidance. You may need to perform the Bluetooth discovery/connectivity first.

    2. My bluetooth dongle automatically assigned COM 17 for my receiver, but iGuidance only shows up to COM16 under auto detect mode. What can I do?

You might want to try changing the PPC registry and see if that works.
    1) download and install PPC RegEdit via http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
    2) change HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iNav\iGuidance\CommPort from 1 (default value) to 17 (decimal). Follow the same steps for iGuidance Laptop version.

    3. When I go into gps setting in iGuidance, what baud rate should I set my receiver at?

Standard NMEA (gps data) baud rate is 4800bps, but we recommend using higher rate if possible, e.g. 38400bps.

    4. I can't seem to connect iGuidance to my bluetooth GPS receiver. The receiver seems connected property and is working, but I kept getting error message stating that my gps receiver isn't properly connected. The signal kept getting dropped, and I have to restart my notebook several times to get it to work again.

The error message indicates that iGuidance either cannot open the COM port, or if it can open the COM port, it cannot detect GPS signal.
    Please try the following:
    1) Turn on the Bluetooth GPS receiver, before starting iGuidance.
    2) wm2003 users: Run the "Auto-Detect" function under Tools\GPS Options after launching iGuidance. This will check from COM1 to COM16 for GPS signal.
    3) wm5 users: follow the step-by-step bluetooth pairing/configuration instruction in Section VII step #4 of iGuidance Installation Guide.
    4) Or, consult with your GPS manufacturer to find out which COM port is normally assigned to Bluetooth Serial Port, and manually set iGuidance to use the correct COM port by tapping tools > gps options > com port.

In most cases, Auto-Detect works fine (but not available on wm5 devices). However, if the bluetooth dongle assigned the Bluetooth Serial Port to COM16 or above, it may not work property on older version of iGuidance. In which case, you may need to manually configure iGuidance to use COM17 or above, or change the Bluetooth Serial port to port COM16 or less.

    5. My GPS is not detected by my laptop. I tested out my USB port, and it's detecting other devices. How do I know if it's working or not?

First, you need to check to see if the driver for your GPS is properly installed. To do this, verify if your "Device Manager" recognizes your GPS (right-click on "My Computer", select "Manage", then select "Device Manager" from the list of options on the right). Also, double check that you have installed the correct version of USB-to-Serial Bridge driver for your receiver on your laptop. This driver usually comes w/ your receiver or may be downloaded from receiver manufacturer's site.

    6. I don't think I got the USB-to-Serial driver that suppose to come w/ my Royaltek Sapphire GPS Mouse receiver which will allow me to use iGuidance on my laptop.

Download and install PPC RegEdit via http://www.royaltek.com/proditem.asp?filename=Support/software.asp for the most recent drivers.

    7. Every time I open iGuidance from desktop, the software asks for "Baud rate" and COM port setting even though I'm not connected to a GPS receiver. Why is that and what should I do?

The software is designed so every time it's opened it'll try to detect a GPS receiver (thus asking you for "baud rate" and "COM port". You can either use the "auto detect" feature or manually select the COM port setting by going to your "Device Manager" to determine which COM port the GPS receiver has been installed under and simply choose the lowest baud rate (the rate at which the receiver will send info to your desktop). If you are just trying to use iGuidance on your laptop for pre-trip map planning purpose (so gps receiver isn't necessary), then just click "ok" to bypass the message window, and you may proceed accordingly.

    8. I'm trying to install my new GPS system, but iGuidance isn't recognizing and/or receiving signals from my GPS unit. What should I do?

The error message indicates that iGuidance either cannot open the COM port, or if it can open the COM port, it cannot detect GPS signal.
    Many possibilities:
    1) Make sure your GPS receiver is working properly.
    2) Make sure the USB-to-Serial bridge driver provided by your GPS manufacturer is installed (for laptop users).
    3) Check the COM serial setting of your GPS unit and make sure it matches the one selected in your iGuidance.
    4) Sometimes GPS manufacturer provides its own GPS software. If you loaded that software, make sure it's not running when you try to run iGuidance at the same time. Otherwise, both software will conflict w/ each other.
    5) Check to see if any of your other utility software (WI-FI, infra-red) isn't active and trying to access the same COM port as iGuidance.

  • Maps

    1. When I try to load more than one state onto my PDA it refuses to load.

The most likely problem is that your PDA is running out of on-board memory. We recommend users to load all maps onto different SD or CF cards, so you can just pop them in and out, and reserve the onboard PPC memory for route calculation. Since iGuidance current versions only support single map file, make sure you select all the states you want and load them all at once instead of loading single state each time.

    2. Why can't I add additional states onto my PDA SD card when there is enough space?

This is because the map loader is unable to "add" or "append" additional states. Each time a new set of maps is selected, the new map file is saved over the old file and will replace the entire content. The solution is to select every state you would like at the same time and store them on your SD or CF card (for PPC users) or laptop c:\\ drive (for laptop users).

    3. I was told that iGuidance only supports single map file in that new map loaded will replace the previous map entirely. I'd like to save multiple map files to my SD so it's more convenient when I'm on the road. Is there anyway around it?

    4. I encountered incorrect map info. Where and to whom should I report the error?

You may submit info via: http://www.navteq.com/updates/mapfeedback.html

    5. I'm trying to install my map and got the following error message, "Internal Error Line XXXX Please Contact Technical Support". What does that mean?

Most likely iread/write speed incompatibility between the program media format and your media drive. Some customers may simply make a copy of the disks using their own CD or DVD writer and then use the copy they made to load map.

You may also try moving the map data files from the disks to your laptop/desktop hard drive first (will shorten loading time by about 30% too).
    To do this:
    1) Please copy the directories \CD1, \CD2, and \CD3 from iGuidance DVD Disc (or CD Data Disc 1, Disc 2, and Disc 3, respectively) to the root directory of C: drive on your laptop and/or desktop (i.e. C:\CD1, C:\CD2, C:\CD3).
    2) Please remove any disk from the CD-ROM or DVD ROM drive before running the MapLoader again. The MapLoader will automatically find the files from C:\CD1, C:\CD2, and C:\CD3 directories. You may delete the CD1, CD2, and CD3 directories after all the maps have been loaded successfully.

    6. When I try to load the entire 48 states, I eventually get an error message stating "error copying from the temp folder." Less states works. How can I load them all?

Currently, we do not know what is the cause of the problem. Some people have successfully installed the whole map data, but others have failed. We think it may be related to the size of the swap or temporary cache file on each person's desktop/laptop. You may try creating the map on a different pc/laptop.

    7. I'm trying to load the entire US map onto my laptop, but it seems to take forever. Is that normal?

That's because our map loader tries to stitch the regions on the fly to create a "seamless" map, which allows PocketPC users to pick and choose the regions and store them on a small storage card. Also, since there are 3 map data folders, unless you have the dvd version, users on the border wouldn't be able to route seamlessly without changing CD's. Please also note that selecting all of the states using map loader will be very slow on v1.0/v1.1/v2.0/v2.01, due to the tracing of each state border. Starting with v2.0.2 and above, you may use single click to "Select all states". Loading the entire N. Ame data of 2.3GB will take up to 45-80 minutes depends on the laptop.

    8. When I reload map with different states I got the message "Error opening destination file names.bin". What does that mean?

Your PPC storage card probably ran out of memory on the storage card or may be defective.

    9. When I select a map to download to my PPC, I get the map for another state.

Please try delete \iNav iGuidance\Maps directory and reload the map you need. Make sure iGuidance application is completely closed before you launch MapLoader.

    10. I loaded the maps but can't seem to find it on my PPC. Where should I look?

If you installed the map to the PPC main memory, it should be under \Program Files\iNav\iGuidance\Maps file. On the SD card, it should be under \iNav iGuidance\Maps. Please note that we recommend loading all the maps on SD or CF card instead of using onboard memory off the PDA.

    11. I want to be able to load both city/regional AND state map, but since one will erase/override the other, is there any other way I can get around that?

You may store city/regional on one SD card, and states on the other card.

    12. When I attempt to generate a map, I get an error message "Internal error in line 5406 Please contact technical Support." This happens while it is generating map data and copying the linkinfo.bin file.

Please make sure that you have completely exited iGuidance on your PDA (and/or desktop/laptop) before you launch MapLoader. Usually the inability to generate any .bin file means that the file is currently in use (or in some cases, has been corrupted). If this does not work, try clean any dust or fingerprint off your program disk, or you may also try moving the map data files from the disks to your laptop/desktop hard drive first (will shorten loading time by about 30% too) and generate your map file from your laptop's C:\ drive onto your SD card.

    13. I'll be traveling through several states, but I don't have enough memory on my SD card to load all the detailed maps for all of the states. Is there anything else I can do besides buying another memory card?

(This applies to iGuidance v1.0/1.1/2.0/2.0.1 ONLY) Yes. You may use the "automatik" feature in iGuidance. For example, if you are traveling from NY to N. Carolina, instead of loading all of the states in between, just load the origin state (NY) and the destination state (N. Carolina). And all the major freeway info will be included automatically along w/ fwys for states which you didn't load but will pass through from pt A to pt B. For iGuidance v2.0.2 and above, this feature has been deleted.

    14. I'm trying to add map data to my pocket pc but kept getting an error message, "Error writing destination file names.bin". Why?

If adding map to storage card, please check to make sure your SD isn't in "locked" position for new input. Also make sure it's working. If card is working and unlocked, or writing map to main ppc memory, then your storage card or main ppc memory is probably full. Please also check to make sure your iGuidance application is closed completely before launching MapLoader.

    15. Is it possible to load the entire US map data?

To load the entire map, you'll need at least 2.1GB of memory (in terms of memory cards).

    16. I want to use a second SD card for map storage. How do I get the program on the card without reloading everything from scratch?

Store the program data into main memory on your PPC and then store map data on the SD card. This way you can generate two sets and use the two interchangeably.

    17. My map stops just outside of Montreal? Any fix?

Navteq has released an updated version of Canada map which provides map data and geocoding for most of Canada down to street # level. iGuidance v2.0.2 or above should include this latest version of map data.

  • General Software-Related Questions

    1. When I run the software for the first time on my laptop it hangs.

iGuidance v2.0.1 (and earlier versions) cannot determine whether Bluetooth radio is turned on or off. If the radio is off, iGuidance will hang because the interrupt never returns. Please check and make sure that the Bluetooth radio is turned on before launching iGuidance. You may need to perform the Bluetooth discovery/connectivity first.

    2. I am getting errors when generating maps directly to my SD card on my pocket PC.

When you are generating map data onto your SD card, make sure that iGuidance is not running because the program is actively using the files you are trying to overwrite. Use file > exit to complete close iGuidance before launching MapLoader.

    3. When I run iGuidance it gives me the following error, "Error: Invalid or missing data file names.bin."

This error message is activated either when map isn't loaded at all, or if the map wasn't installed property. Make sure that your map data is properly installed before running iGuidance. Use the MapLoader program to install the map data, and also make sure that iGuidance is not running at the same time when you launch MapLoader. For laptop users, you may locate your map directory under c:\\inav iguidance\maps. For ppc users, you may locate the map file via programs\file explorer\storage card: iNav iGuidance\maps.

    4. How do I delete all the favorites created on my ppc?

Assuming all the maps are stored on your SD card, use PPC's file explorer and delete \inav iguidance\favorites. This will delete the entire favorite files along w/ all the favorites previous saved.

    5. Is iGuidance compatible w/ pocket pc phones or SmartPhones?

Yes, iGuidance is compatible w/ ppc and ppc phones running wm2003, wm2003se, or wm5 ppc or ppc phone edition operating system. However, iGuidance is not compatible w/ devices running Microsoft "smartphone" edition operating system or SYMBIAN OS's.

    6. I've been using iGuidance PC version on my laptop and want to start using it on my pocket pc as well. Is it possible to transfer all the "favorites" I have saved on my laptop to ppc?

Yes, you may do this by copying the "favorites.dat" file under c:\inav iguidance directory from your laptop over to your ppc SD card: iNav iGuidance directory using MS ActiveSync (if your map is saved on your SD card as recommended).

    7. Are there any "hotkeys" (keyboard shortcuts) for people using iGuidance on laptops?

    G: GPSInfo
    R: Route List
    F: Fullscreen On/Off

    V: Volume
    N: North Up/Heading Up
    M: Mute
    P: POI Icon On/Off
    3: 3D
    SPACE: Voice Prompt
    LEFT/RIGHT ARROWS: Switch map views
    UP/DOWN ARROWS: Zoom In/Out
    ENTER: Main Menu

    8. My voice prompt isn't working. I can get music using my windows media in my PPC, but I don't get any voice prompt while using iGuidance.

Please make sure that sounds are "enabled" for Events, Programs and Notifications in Start\Settings\Sounds & Notifications on your PPC.

    9. Does iNav work off existing car stereo?

We never tested it but based on valuable information from one customer, "iGuidance will play through the car stereo provided it has a cassette deck. Using a standard cassette adapter with the appropriate pin for the PPC, the commands come across loud and clear. I've also used standard Sony earbuds connected to the PPC while driving and listening to the stereo, and the commands override all the music and noise. The stereo set up is my preferred method."

    10. My contacts don't work at all. Is the Outlook address format incompatible with the software?

The current version requires that the Contacts address be entered using the format with separate Street: City: State: fields. In Contacts under Work address, for example, please click on the down-arrow "v" to enter the fields separately.

    11. I travel between Canada & US. Every time I'm in US, I noticed that although my GPS receiver is receiving satellite signal, but iGuidance isn't giving me any info on my current position nor destination.

Assuming that you have the GPS receiver connected via serial, CF or Bluetooth, and that you saw NMEA data streams and satellite signals strength (green bars) in View\GPS Info screen, please be aware that the receiver may take more than 15 minutes to obtain fix when you move from another continent. Also, if you were operating within a vehicle with UV-filtering windshields, GPS signals can't pass through.

    12. Is there an user manual for iGuidance software?

Yes. The installation of the DVD disk or CD Data Disc #1 should have copied iGuidance.chm file to \Program Files\iNav\iGuidance directory. An "iGuidance User Manual" icon should also be automatically added to your desktop when you first loaded iGuidance Program DVD disk or Installation CD disk #1. The same manual is available on the disk unde file "iGuidance User Manual" and also available on www.inavcorp.com/support/igusermanual.html, and if you wish, may be downloaded and saved using MS FrontPage.

    13. Is it possible to change/set iGuidance display property to different sizes in order to get larger display?

Our default setting is set for 96 DPI. Currently iGuidance does not support larger fonts and the existing fonts are formatted w/ either PDA screen (240x320, 240x240, 480x640), laptop 13" or larger, or 5", & 7" sized display using iGuidance UMPC version.

    14. I can't seem to find the exact location of the address I'm looking for. Several times I find the actual locations are 50-150 feet off from what's indicated on iGuidance.

iGuidance GPS system is based on Navteq Map Data, which is probably one of the best, if not the best, map data provider. Consumer-grade GPS system is a bit tricky as it provides destination mapping based on "approximation", often in "block" of houses. Most of locations will include geo-coding down to street # level, but some areas you may end up with locations that are within 1-2 blocks of your actual destination. And if your destination falls in the middle of the "block", the distance shown will be off. In addition, due to physical nature of GPS receivers, there will always be at least one second delay for the satellite signal to come in through receivers. Beyond the unavoidable minimum delay, different receivers also may offer different levels of sensitivity. Other issues may be due to driver's perception. For example, iGuidance calculates distance from the middle of intersection (where two intersecting lanes connect) and not at the stop line where the driver is stopped. And lastly, iGuidance does not use the "guess ahead" method to "predict" where the driver is turning in case the program "guesses" wrong.

    15. I'll be traveling through several states, but I don't have enough ram for my ppc to load all the detailed map for all of the states. Is there anything else I can do besides buying another memory card?

Yes. You may use the "automatik" feature in iGuidance (available on iGuidance v1.0/1.1/2.0/2.0.1 ONLY). For example, if you are traveling from NY to N. Carolina, instead of loading all of the states in between the two, just load the origin state (NY) and the destination state (N. Carolina). And all the major freeway info will be included automatically along w/ fwys for states which you didn't load but will pass through from pt A to pt B.

    16. Will iGuidance work on laptops running Japanese or Chinese Windows XP?

Yes, but the voice prompt and display will only be in English, and you must also have installed the English translation file for your OS on your laptop.

    17. Will iGuidance Europe download and run in the Magellan Roadmate 500? ie, will auto-routing function?

    No, and no.

    18. I have a touch screen monitor. Does iGuidance support that?

Yes, through a virtual keyboard screen.

  • Hardware

    1. How much extra memory do I need?

The most likely problem is that your PDA is running out of on-board memory. We recommend users to load all maps onto different SD or CF cards, so you can just pop them in and out, and reserve the onboard PPC memory for route calculation. Since iGuidance current versions only support single map file, make sure you select all the states you want and load them all at once instead of loading single state each time.

    2. Can I use this software with my old GPS receiver?

Yes. The software is compatible with any GPS receiver hardware which complies with true NMEA standard. However, if you are using a mouse receiver on a laptop through USB port, please be sure to install the USB-to-Serial bridge driver which came w/ your receiver.

    3. Where can I get the current USB-to-serial bridge driver for my Delorme receiver that'll work w/ iGuidance?

    http://www.delorme.com/support/gps/uemate005.asp.

    4. I don't think my Royaltek Sapphire Mouse GPS receiver is working properly. How do I troubleshoot it?

You may access Royaltek's website for troubleshooting info on page 43 and page 32-35 of user manual off website link:

    http://www.royaltek.com/Manuals/RGM-2000%20User%20Manual%20V1.4.pdf.

    5. I purchased your receiver & software bundle kit & noticed that the USB device driver didn't have anything for Windows XP (only Windows Home & 2000). What should I do?

Go ahead and install the driver for Windows 2000. Windows XP uses the same driver.

    6. When I tried to configure my GPS w/ my Bluetooth device, my computer asked me for a "PIN or code" of the bluetooth GPS. What's that?

The PIN #/code is a user-defined identification number (or maybe it was already assigned when you purchased your laptop) that allows you to prevent unwanted bluetooth devices from accessing your own bluetooth device (ie, laptop or pda). Any bluetooth receiver ought to work with iGuidance.

    7. Where can I download the most current driver for my Royaltek Sapphire Mouse receiver in order to use it w/ my laptop?

Please go to the manufacturer's website (http://www.royaltek.com/proditem.asp?filename=Support/software.asp) for the most recent drivers.

    8. How is the GPS unit powered? Does the cable recharge while plugged into the cigarette adapter?

Yes, the cigarette adapter does charge the PPC, in most cases. Some of them, however, do not provide enough AMP's though. If you're using an USB with a laptop, the laptop is providing the power, and thus draining its own power. If you're using a CompactFlash (CF) GPS, the PPC is providing power, and thus draining itself. Bluetooth... usually has its own battery.

    9. How much extra memory do I need?

Will iGuidance Europe download and run in the Magellan Roadmate 500? ie, will auto-routing function?

    10. I've been reading about some add'l drivers may be needed for Toshiba PPC users. What exactly is required?

If you have a Royaltek Sapphire Mouse receiver (which we bundle w/ our iGuidance software), and you use it w/ Toshiba e330/e350/e740/e750 PDA's running WM2003, you'll need to download a special driver for your PDA from Royaltek website, (http://www.royaltek.com/proditem.asp?filename=Support/software.asp) driver item #4.
